The 1996 World Series Yankees were an incredible team!
“It was their first World Series in 18 years. In true Yankees fashion, the 1996 team was an eclectic mix of homegrown stars and hired guns.” — Cork Gaines and Meredith Cash
The 1996 season was a bit of a Cinderella story for the Yankees. After losing two games in the final series to the Atlanta Braves, the Yankees won four games in a row to win the series, becoming the first team to ever overcome a two-game loss at the beginning of a series. They ended up taking home their 23rd World Series title that year. It’s no surprise that the 1996 Yankees have so many fans — everyone loves a good underdog story!
What Fans Have to Say
The 1996 season was such a memorable one that the team got back together to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their big win in 2016. Fans were ecstatic, and Yankees fan Evan Halpine-Berger explained why, saying:
“The Yankees are not supposed to be perennial losers. This was the team that restored New York to its rightful place as the baseball capital of the world.”
