“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” – Captain James T. Kirk
This passage was read aloud before every episode of Star Trek: The Original Series. It perfectly prepared the viewer for what was to come, regardless of the episode. In fact, it was this deep exploration of new challenges and areas that attracted so many fans to Star Trek: The Original Series in the first place.
While the show ended in 1969, it spawned countless spinoff shows, movies, and books over the following decades, which together helped to form a large cult following around the series.
What Fans Have to Say
Star Trek: The Original Series has attracted more than space fanatics; it’s also attracted plenty of Hollywood celebrities. For example, actor Mila Kunis told GQ in a 2011 interview that:
“I went to the Star Trek Experience in Vegas maybe five years ago. I hung out with a bunch of fake characters inside Quark’s bar. There were all these actors there pretending to be the different characters from the different shows. Yes, I loved it.”
While Trekkies can rejoice in the fact that a Star Trek 4 is in the works, it has no official release date yet. Until then, fans will just have to throw in their favorite reruns of the original series.
